Vriesea duvaliana is native to Brazil.

The perennials prefer a sunny situation in cool to moist soil. They tolerate temperatures only above at least 1°C.

When grown as an epiphyte the plants are mounted on a piece of bark or a branch (e.g. Taxus or Thuja) and the roots are wrapped in sphagnum moss.

Under glass use a mixture of bark straw, leaf mulch and sharp sand.

In summer the plants prefer high humidity, protection from the hot midday sun.
